Genie 101 : Network Switches

Default mode enables the switch to work as an industry standard PoE switch, with communications between each of the PoE ports. The downlink ports will have maximum bandwidth of 100Mbps and the transmission distance depending on the cable quality, can be up to 100m with PoE (Up  to 30W). CCTV mode offers the user a further three unique features to the default industry standard.

The downlink ports will not communicate with the other downlink ports, they will only communicate with the uplink port, this function provides the advantage of further security for example; with three cameras installed outside, and another installed inside – set to default mode where each downlink port could communicate with each other, if an intruder destroys an easily accessible outdoor camera and uses a laptop to connect to the downlink port, they will be able to access all of the cameras and NVR fairly easily. However if enabled to CCTV mode, they won’t be able to access any cameras on the downlink ports because the downlink ports can not communicate with each other, they only transmit data to the uplink port (NVR).

Topology Network SwitchesThe downlink speed is reduced to 10Mbps per downlink port when CCTV mode is enabled, however the cable distance is increased to 250m with up to 30 watts PoE when using high quality cable. Running the switch in CCTV mode could prevent instability caused by layer 2 routing loop. This prevents any interference during transmission, with installers and users benefiting from much smoother and clearer images.

On models such as the IP8ESP CCTV mode can simply activated with a flick of a switch. Turning off communication between the PoE ports but, allowing communication between each downlink port and the 2 Up-Link ports. Extending the transmission distance by up to 250m and increasing power to each camera. Installers and users using the IP16ESP and IP24ESP models benefit from an interface that allows the to see real-time information about their surveillance network, such as device status, PoE consumption data and network bandwidth utilisation.
